Why Good Product Design Matters

August 20, 2014

When it comes to any product, be it one that’s physical or a service, design is an important element. A good design takes things from ordinary to extraordinary, and helps the product resonate with its consumer.

At Azure Water, a custom label water bottling company, we appreciate a good design. For us, this meant creating bottled water that was not only pleasing to look at, but sturdy to the touch as well. And when our custom label bottled water is used in weddings, parties and events, they contribute to the overall event design as well.

For the event planners, wedding planners, vendors and any other readers of this blog, we’ve compiled some standards we’ve found to be true about good design.

Good Design Serves a Purpose

A good product design must serve a valuable purpose. For instance, our bottles are designed not just to hold water, which plenty of other products can do, but to also be environmentally friendly. In terms of event planning, a good design might be one that includes plenty of opportunity for guest engagement. For instance, any event could utilize social media by presenting a hashtag to be used, but a well designed event may also include a large screen where everyone at the event can see the posts in real time.

“In Style” Doesn’t Always Mean Good Design

Often times, people wrongly assume that what’s in style is also good design. This is not always the case! Neon orange might be the color of the year, but trying to work it into your client’s wedding or your next party could cause a lot of discontent among the clients and guests. A good product or service design first and foremost focuses on what the consumer wants, and then style can be worked in later.

Good Design is Visually Pleasing

We can’t help it, humans are visual people. So for a design to truly be great, it needs to look good. For products like our custom label bottled water, we accomplish this by using labels with crisp colors and a bottle with a unique and memorable design. An event design can be made visually appealing through strategic use of color, venue and decorations. People are much more likely to use products more often, and have more pleasant memories of an event if they are visually appealing.

It Must be Innovative

We like this quote from industrial engineer, Dieter Rams, “The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted.” At the rate at which technology is developing, there is no reason why any product or service design can’t have an innovative aspect. Before you begin to worry about how to come up with a groundbreaking idea, remember that even a small change can be innovative. For instance, at Azure Water our bottle is innovative because its design makes it more durable than many popular bottled water brands, but doesn’t use more plastic.
