Azure Water Salutes MaryKatherine Fechtel’s Miss America Performance

MaryKatherine Fechtel of Leesburg didn’t make it to the top to become Miss America 2016. That title went to Georgia’s Betty Cantrell.

But Fechtel, Miss Florida 2015, did make it into the top ten along with Miss Oklahoma, Miss Louisiana, Miss Tennessee, Miss Texas, Miss Alabama, Miss Colorado, Miss South Carolina, Miss Mississippi and Miss Georgia.

Cantrell performed “Madame Butterfly” to take the crown Sept. 13 at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey. Contestants from all 50 states, The District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated.

Fechtel, 20, performed a lyrical dance to the song “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” Her platform issue is: “A Safety Net – Protecting Our Youth from Online Predators.”

Formerly Miss University of Florida, she was crowned Miss Florida 2015 June 20 at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater. She won her first pageant in 2007 as Junior Miss Leesburg.

Leesburg city commissioners and the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant’ board of directors gave Fechtel their farewell wishes at an Aug. 23 event at Leesburg’s Viaport Florida mall. That event was sponsored by the Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Leesburg Partnership, Viaport Florida, Miss Daisy’s Flowers and Gifts, and Azure Water.

Fechtel, who graduated from Leesburg’s First Academy High School and is attending the University of Florida, said she aspires to earn a JD with a specialty in international human rights law. She is a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship recipient; member of the Florida Blue Key Honor Society at the University of Florida; studied at Viadrina European University in Frankfurt, Germany.
