How Much Water Does Our Planet Have?

September 23, 2015

The grand waters seemingly stretch endlessly, painting a soft, animated blue across the planet’s gently rounded surface. Nature’s liquid – as displayed across the oceans – is both a capricious, tumultuous beast and a magnificent rhapsody, angrily raging in one moment and projecting a sense of awestruck beauty and serenity in the next.

We at Azure Water, the premier source for bottled water co-packing, hold a deep appreciation for life’s most precious commodity. Water sustains our existence; even more, it enriches our lives. It is biology’s elixir.

While astronomers wonder whether this planet may be one of the few in the Milky Way galaxy to contain life-generating supplies of water, we will explore how much this planet actually has.

According to Cool Cosmos, the Earth has 326 million trillion gallons of water. However, less than three percent of that water is fresh – and more than two-thirds is locked in ice caps and glaciers.

How much water does our planet have?

While water covers 70 percent of the planet’s surface, it is .05 percent of the Earth’s total mass, according to Science Nordic.

About 97 percent of the planet’s water is in the oceans. The Earth has more than 333 million cubic miles of water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A cubic mile is the size of a cube one mile in size on all sides.

More than three-quarters of Earth’s surface is covered in water and nearly 98 percent of that is the oceans, according to blueideas.com.

Here is how much water we use for each of these common habits, according to National Geographic:

  • Having a glass of water: .13 gallons.
  • Washing hands and face: 2 gallons.
  • Brushing your teeth: .26 gallons.
  • Taking a bath: 24 gallons.
  • Taking a shower: 7 gallons.
  • Flushing the toilet: 2 gallons.
  • Washing one load of laundry: 31 gallons.
  • Watering your garden: 2 gallons.

Azure Water’s facility uses state-of-the-art equipment that is able to generate 5,000 cases a day, including alkaline spring water and artesian mineral water. We can produce custom-bottle shapes, and fill, seal and label your bottles.
